In the latest episode of the CTCP Podcast, developed within the scope of the BioShoes4All project, we had the privilege of speaking with David Macário, Head of the Innovation Department at ERT. Founded in 1992, ERT started as a small company dedicated to the lamination of textiles for shoe linings but quickly transformed into a Portuguese multinational by entering the automotive sector in 2000, leveraging the knowledge gained in its initial area of expertise. Today, the company is recognized for manufacturing components for automotive interiors, with its headquarters in São João da Madeira.
David Macário, passionate about science and creativity from a young age, shared his professional journey that took him from electronics and radio astronomy to the footwear industry. His diverse experience culminated in his current position at ERT, where he leads innovation projects and collaborates with scientific and technological entities.
Throughout the interview, David emphasized the crucial role of ERT in the BioShoes4All project, highlighting the development of innovative solutions for the footwear industry. One of the main focuses of the company has been the creation of insoles made from biological-based foam and biopolyurethane. This process involves the substitution of fossil-based materials with biological raw materials, representing a significant step toward sustainability.
ERT is also working on two innovative models of indoor footwear: one made with recycled materials and another with biological-based materials. David explained that the main challenges in this development include the compatibility of diverse materials and the strict adherence to the technical standards of the industry, always with the goal of minimizing the use of fossil-based materials.
A particularly interesting aspect of ERT’s work is its commitment to circular economy. David outlined the company’s efforts in EVA recycling to create composites for soles and insoles. This process, initially based on empirical methods, was significantly enhanced through laboratory research, resulting in greater replicability and product quality.
In the final part of the podcast, David discussed the impact of these innovative products on the market. While acknowledging the challenge of higher prices associated with these new technologies, the Head of Innovation emphasized the importance of this transition to reduce dependence on fossil energy sources and create more sustainable products. This vision aligns with global trends of sustainability and environmental responsibility in the footwear industry.
